One of the new endeavors that we’re seeing more of are microbreweries. They have unique needs from the perspective of space use. Often there are two distinct areas. One for brewing beer and another for serving beer. Each must address things such as seating, equipment and movement.

Another part of the design process is consideration of mechanical and utility elements. For a brewpub that incorporates tour groups another layer of safety and presentation must be incorporated.

For Badger Hill the work also included coordination with the local authorities to gain proper permits. Of course the end result is what we’re most interested in—great beer!

Be sure to stop in and try their really good stout beer named Foundation. Coincidence?
A project that has been in the works for a few years came to light in a Star Tribune article yesterday. The client is local couple Jamie and Jordan Leopold. Their vision is for a wedding-focused event center in a visually appealing spot. After a few site reviews and initial discussions with local municipalities a spot along the Mississippi River in Brooklyn Park has been selected.

Many projects draw community interest, but this project has garnered more than typical attention because of the purpose (event center), location (along the river) and ownership group. Leopold's are a NHL family, Jordan plays defenseman for the St. Louis Blues. Born in Golden Valley and a U of M alumni the local ties run deep. Jamie, in a presentation to the planning commission noted that the capacity of just over 300 makes it a great wedding reception spot. Access to the river flats for a unique ceremony will add to the attractiveness of the event center.
One spark of new products is at the intersection of energy saving and DIY. Another innovation leap-off point is leveraging smartphones. In short, there are a bevy of new products that are fun, smart and worthy of a few moments consideration.

Do It Yourself Air Conditioning
It is summertime in Minnesota. Some love to live with open windows and the natural breeze. Others enjoy keeping the temperature at very cold wintery levels. Either way, take a look at this air conditioner that can be made for $15. It uses a Coleman Cooler, check it out!

A Thermostat That Learns
This product from nest, a thermostat that learns, works based on your use and adapts to more efficient heating and cooling patterns. You use it like any thermostat when you are at home. You can also program it from your smartphone. So, if you are going to be away for an extra day you can adjust the temperature to conserve energy.

Grill or Planter?
This innovative product makes grilling time fun, and the time between beautiful. Available from Black+Blum, the hot pot, doubles as herb garden and grill. Grow basil in the grill's top and then use it on your grilled vegetables--it couldn't be any fresher.
From the beginning of time, humans have sought after a more comfortable chair. Today there are more choices than ever. One recently caught our eye: the Perillo chair designed by Martin Bellendat and distributed by Dauphin of North America. It is very modern and formed from one continuous run of material. The seat, arm rest and back take form when you take a seat. The design causes your eyes to loop continuously as you try to fit it into a traditional form. Note to the reader: it's not going to happen.

Of course, it is also about where the chair is. Who wouldn't love a chair across from a close friend over lunch. Or a courtside seat (why they are still folding chairs is confounding!) at a playoff basketball game. During a Minnesota winter, we'd all probably take a seat on the beach or poolside instead of the most comfy spot in our home's den.
The Minnesota Twins home, Target Field. TCF Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Gophers. The "X" as Minnesota Wild fans describe Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Even Target Center, home of the Minnesota Timberwolves, has had a grass rooftop added and new plans for enhancements. Of course, the new stadium for the Minnesota Vikings is top of mind as we witness it growing from the foundation up in dramatic fashion.

Each stadium has brought a unique value to their fans and communities. However, many continue to see these expanses as underused, expensive and extravagant when there are so many community needs. Recently, a designer of events on a grand scale dove into stadium designs at the conceptual level. The outcomes of the work provide some interesting and thought-provoking ideas.
For instance, consider sliding down seating areas into a temporary pool in the playing area. Many homeowners rely on Angie's List to get honest feedback about professionals. However, some providers are critical of the business and question its usefulness. According to the magazine Remodeling, many of its critics suggest the service charges them a significant fee to advertise without generating many leads. Another issue for some is that just one or two negative reviews can make it hard to generate new leads—and that money spent on advertising can influence how easily those bad reviews go away. Read more about what remodelers are saying and let us know what you think. Fluorescent lamps, low VOC paint and recyclable carpet, tiles and flooring—including reclaimed barn wood—are just some of the green materials used in the design. The space includes a floor plan that flows naturally for patients and staff. Take a look:

The mixture of reclaimed barn siding and other simple, clean materials is inviting—and good for the environment.
The Foundation Architects uses visual cues like curved walls and pathways and smartly scaled entrances to help guide both adult and young dental patients to the next area—helping them feel at ease in an environment that might generally be associated with anxious feelings. Visual cues like short walls also can cozy up and define an area of a clinic without closing it off.

Here’s a peak at some of these solutions designed into dental clinics by The Foundation Architects.

Welcome Reception
A reception desk with a curved frame welcomes patients of Siverson Dental Care (below) to the clinic. The wall opposite the reception desk also curves—creating a natural pathway that leads patients to a comfortable seating area after they check in.

Chanhassen Family Dental (above) also uses a curved brick wall—and a warm fireplace—to guide patients to the seating area. Patients at these clinics are sure to be in the right frame of mind when the hygienist calls their name.

Child’s Play
Lakeland Family Dental caters to children’s comforts as well. The reception area (below) sports a play area fully equipped with soft floors and a pint-sized entrance.
Smile Designers (left) is home to a brightly colored kids’ area that’s partially screened off from the main area—which allows parents to keep an eye on their young ones having fun. Both spaces are great for children to let off some extra energy before their appointment.
Privacy for Patients
Patients appreciate privacy, but smart design will prevent them from feeling isolated during treatment—enhancing their overall experience. At Woodbury Dental Arts (below), carefully positioned floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and three-quarter-sized “walls” (with frosted panes on top) are just what the dentist ordered.
The Foundation Architects uses a number of materials that subtly allow light and movement to pass through spaces.

An architect may not be able to control the view outside of a clinic, but smart design can change the context. Frosted windows in patient rooms at Excelsior Town Dental were the perfect solution to let light in and keep the view of the parking lot out.

At Smile Designers, screened windows create connections from the clinical area to the reception area, allowing patients to better understand their surroundings and feel less disoriented at the end of their dental appointment.

The frosted glass between the wall and ceiling at the Paul E. Berg, DDS Dental Clinic contains an unexpected surprise—dried wheat grass.

Aquariums are a nice touch in dental clinics as they serve a dual purpose—adding light and movement to a clinic and serving as a relaxing distraction for patients. At Chanhassen Family Dental a see-through custom aquarium connects the waiting room with the operatories.

Recently, the Auckland, New Zealand-based Studio Magazine profiled some of the most creative workspaces in Chicago after one of the magazine's editors and founders, Zoe Ikin, spent some time working in the Windy City. "Chicago had all of these great industrial offices—there was no shortage of light, lofty spaces to visit," Ikin told Patrick Sisson of Dwell.

One such spot was the creative space of IDEO, an international design and innovation consulting firm. The front desk area of the loft space feels creative and airy, and the rooftop deck (pictured above), designed by architectural firm Perkins+Will, is perfect for collaborating—or downward dogs.
Restaurants, bars and cafés are where we go to connect and celebrate with friends. And architecture plays a role in these connections. Recently, the American Institute of Architects celebrated these connections at the video competition Videotect 4: Two People Walk into a Bar at the Walker Art Center.
Architecture Minnesota, the award-winning magazine of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Minnesota, puts on Videotect, an annual video competition that invites people to create short videos focused on various design themes. The yearly contest has featured such themes as sustainable transportation and the skyway’s influence on urban life.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1194838484446075398.post-72794988120134057372014-03-14T16:06:00.001-05:002014-03-20T09:44:27.299-05:00Recycle ThisSustainability and green design is an industry standard for LEED-certified The Foundation Architects. Natural light adds a feeling of warmth to a room—now imagine an entire home that’s filled with natural light. Japanese architect Makoto Tanijiri designed a compact three-story home in Hiroshima, Japan, using polycarbonate plastic for the exterior walls and skipping the interior walls altogether so that the light can shine through.

It’s exactly what the homeowner Daisuke Tokuyama wanted for his family of five. The home shines bright—even on cloudy days. In fact, Tokuyama hardly ever needs to turn on a light. And because the one-and-a-half-inch-thick plastic sheets are milky white (not translucent), family members need not worry about being on display for the entire neighborhood—day or night.

This well-designed home is also aesthetically pleasing—glowing like a firefly at night against an urban setting.
However, in its previous life, the space housed an insurance company. Thanks to The Foundation Architects, this former office space is now a space for engagement and education.

To better utilize the space, The Foundation Architects added another classroom to turn it into a three-classroom center, decreased office space in order to expand the retail area, and incorporated Amma’s brand into the architecture by making a customized desk in the reception/cashier area with the company’s logo. The center exudes a friendly, calm and cheerful vibe—exactly what the doctor ordered.
The yearly contest has focused on such themes as sustainable transportation and the skyway’s influence on urban life.

AIA’s fourth-annual Videotect video competition challenged entrants to show how social interactions are enhanced when smart designs are incorporated into restaurants, bars and cafés. See the finalists’ videos here.

Want to see which video wins? The Walker Art Center will host the show Videotect 4: Two People Walk into a Bar on Thursday, March 13. Videos will be screened at the event and an all-star cast of judges will reveal their picks for the Grand Prize and Honorable Mention prizes. The audience gets to choose the winner of the Viewers’ Choice Award. The video that takes home the Grand Prize will also be shown at the 2014 MSP International Film Festival in April.

The show starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Walker Cinema. Tickets are free.

Whether those structures (stadiums, sports complexes and living quarters) are viewed in a positive light depends much on their look and use in the years to come.
Here’s a look at some notable structures from past Olympics.
Designed by Vancouver’s most renowned architect Arthur Erickson, Canada House was home to the Canadian men’s hockey team during the 2010 Olympics. Two years after the games ended, the units in the building sold for $1.3 to $6 million. The building looks nothing like the others around it with its angled balconies and zigzagged metal panels. Reflected light on the building turns it gold at times.
The Barcelona pool was the stage for the diving and water polo events at the 1992 summer Olympics. Originally built in 1929, this public pool has captivated locals and visitors alike with its stunning panoramic view of the city for almost a century. Scott Manson from the Guardian calls it “the world’s best swimming pool”. Its rock star location wowed Kylie Minogue who used the pool as the setting for a recent music video.
The deck in this project was conceptually designed to be a deck to infinity; the lines leading toward the far end of the deck act to exaggerate the perspective and make it appear longer.
The structure was designed to take up minimal vertical space to allow for more light under the deck and more headroom.
It’s a great fit with some of the biggest interior design trends of 2014, namely that we’re seeing a decline in muted neutrals and an increase in rich, saturated tones.

The idea of a “neutral tone” has been elevated. For example, many may think of the color beige as a neutral but may ignore that a color like navy blue can really shine as a neutral foundation to build a space around.

Sherwin Williams regularly assembles its trend forecast. Note the rich plums and peacock blue in the Curiosity collection and the vividly bright hues of the Intrinsic collection.
Another important aspect of design is privacy.
Let’s examine a few projects completed by The Foundation that strike a great balance between privacy and engagement:

The Foundation Architects remodeled the CBS Radio in Minneapolis. We
integrated windows with glass of varying degrees of transparency and
opaqueness to open up some areas and create privacy without isolation in
others.

The newsroom of the studio (pictured above), once completely hidden, is now visible from the lobby to showcase the hub of this busy radio station.
Colored glass panels combined with reeded glass obscure the view from the hallway to create privacy in the new green room (pictured below) for visiting celebrities.

Take a look at our project for Siverson Dental:

Each treatment area feels private but also feels connected to the whole clinic, so patients don’t feel isolated.

This hygiene area of Lakeland Family Dental (above) also provides privacy without feeling too enclosed.

The independent screened appointment desks at Smile Designers are a stylish approach to providing added comfort and privacy for patients.
These segments of space provide clues, usually unconsciously, as to the purpose of the areas and space around you.

For example, when you enter a typical home, you’re greeted by an entryway or
vestibule with a lower ceiling. Lower ceilings have a cozier effect on
us, so an entryway becomes more inviting. We feel welcome. Additional
design clues define spaces, like in this rambler transformation:

The columns and arches divide the space subtly and create pathways between them.

You might not even recognize it, but when these zones don’t exist, it creates discomfort.
The Foundation Architects had a unique challenge when renovating Lakeland Family Dental. The scale of the building and its orientation with the parking lot and entrance had the potential to be offputting and daunting—definitely undesirable characteristics for a clinic that aims to be welcoming to patients. The building was essentially oriented in reverse of what we would expect based on its position to the main road and parking lot.

Solution: We integrated clues to lead to the entryway, like the low wall in the front of the building so visitors easily relate to the space.

Distinct rooflines were added to the existing building. The modern, eye-catching canopy over the front door brings the entrance down to scale, and then the open entryway guides patients in and out of the clinic while connecting the exterior and the interior with a defining concrete wall and signage, as shown below:

But this building in Mexico City takes it to the next level. A new tile, Prosolve 370e, as seen on the exterior of the Torre de Especialidades outside Mexico City’s Manuel Gea Gonzalez Hospital, converts the chemicals found in pollution into less toxic substances.

The tiles are coated with a special pigment that reacts with air pollutants when they're exposed to UV light. The chemicals then break down into compounds like carbon dioxide and water. The pigment will continue to purify the air until the coating wears off.

The unique eye-catching design is certainly a conversation piece, but beyond that, many have described it as a powerful symbol that something is being done to make Mexico City a better and safer place for its inhabitants.

Sustainability and green design is not just a trend to us. It’s an industry standard. The best design is an affordable solution you feel great about now and in the future.View our portfolio.
